Portuguese Presidency of European Union

Mensagem aos turistas:

The Portuguese Prime Minister and his government have persecuted and intimidated its critics. In the course of the last two months, there have been several cases of civil servants punished for joking (in private) about Mr. Socrates dubious university degree, and for voicing public criticism of the government's health policies. The Prime Minister has prosecuted the author of a blog that leaked evidence of discrepancies between Mr. Socrates claimed academic credentials and supporting documentation. All the national media followed the blog's leads and found further evidence to the original claims, revealing a host of contradictions between Mr. Socrates official CV and the University files. Following the public scandal, the private University wherefrom Mr. Socrates graduated was closed by government mandate. Recently a technical report has contradicted Mr. Socrates arguments about the location of a new international airport, and its sponsors have refused to identify themselves fearing retaliation through denial of government contracts. There is an overwhelming sense of political harassment and heavy-handedness by high government officials which have the protection and encouragement of the Prime Minister. Welcome to the sun!
